You can just do things
"Just do it" for nerds
Sup nerds,
“You can just do things” is my new favorite catchphrase.
It’s the idea that you can just make shit happen. Quit your job and go founder mode. Meet your heroes. Make millions. You can just do things. Over the past few months, its become a popular mantra/meme around Silicon Valley.
It’s basically “Just do it” for nerds like me.
I say it to my friends when they’re doubting starting a new business. I say it to myself when I need a pick me up or reminder to work out. My wife says it to me when I’m feeling lazy and don’t want to clean the dishes. “You can just do things”.
It sounds stupid, but is it stupid if it works?
All my life, teachers, parents, friends told me what I could NOT do. You can’t get a job without a college degree. You can’t get paid for being funny. You can’t build software without knowing how to code. So I listened to them for most of my life.
But it turned out they were wrong.
You can get jobs without degrees and start businesses without business school. You can make serious money for being funny. And you can build software without knowing how to code. You can literally just do things and no one can stop you.
Like this week, I launched Memes-as-a-Service for Cyber Monday.
No landing page.
No fancy promo.
No Product Hunt launch lol.
I didn’t even plan it or alert my team. I just woke up, chose violence, and wrote an email and Twitter/LinkedIn posts with 1 Stripe link for the 1 meme/day $420.69/month and 1 Stripe link for the 3 memes/day $699/month.
That’s it.
And the results were startling.
You can literally just sell things on the internet
You can literally just do things.
Seriously embracing this philosophy has changed my life and many others.
A few examples from my world:
College kid builds an app to hang with his classmates. Tweets about it. Founder of Shopify sees it and replies with internship offer. You can just do things.

I think I first heard “You can just do things” from Pieter Levels, the indie hacker who has built 100s of solo software projects and is making millions while traveling the world.
And at first, it was like ok yes you can do those things, but can I do those things?
And it turns out yes, you can literally just do things. You don’t need to know how to code. You don’t need to use the “right” note-taking tools. You can literally just do things.

My wife Erica now says this catchphrase all the time. It’s like a mantra for us. She’s fully embraced the “You can just do things” lifestyle.
She went viral on our honeymoon with a 10M view banger. She’s been making banger memes. She’s making Twitter friends. She met one of her heroes in the DMs. She messaged a stranger to buy my book and now that person is one of my biggest power users and homies (you can just DM people).
Now the hard work is compounding. She started with like 200 followers a few months ago and everyday a bit more of just doing things is paying off. You can just do things!!!
69 followers until I reach 1k lol

“You can just do things” is the “Just do it” for internet nerds.
And it goes along really well with a few of my other favorite mantras:

Want to make money on the internet?
Well, you’ve got to publish a buy “button” somewhere.
That could be a literal button on your software or e-commerce shop, it could be a simple Stripe link, it could be an invoice sent via emails. But the point is the only way to make money online is to give yourself the opportunity to do that.
People around the globe have money to spend on your services and work.
Publish a buy button on the internet, you can just do things.
Need memes?
Seriously, it’s:
1 meme/day for $420.69/month (payment link here)
3 memes/day for $699/month (payment link here)
Many such cases

Wanna make movies?
Wanna make millions?
Wanna meet Peter Thiel and Palmer Luckey?
If someone else has done all of the above, why not you?
You need to be more delusional, you can just do things.
“You can just do things” x “You need to be more delusional” — incredible combo

“Think from first principles” - Elon Musk
This idea is usually about breaking engineering problems down into physics, but life is just a series of engineering problems anyways.
Why can't you do it?
Become a life engineer. Break down your life into first principles. Why can’t I do this? When you do this, you realize there’s nothing stopping you except: 1) the laws of physics 2) your beliefs.
Break things down into simpler steps. Maybe you can’t make the movie now, but you can write the script. Maybe you can’t millions yet, but you can in the future. Let the fancy laws of physics and space-time continuum or whatever do the work.
Think from first principles, you can just do things.
You Can Just Do Things is the most important philosophy of our era
