Google Trends for Viral Memes

Capturing trending moments

I drank way too much Red Bull and went down a Google Trends rabbithole.

Did you know Google Trends can show you data on viral memes????? There’s not an official “memes tab” per se, but if you search for a meme name or topic, you’ll see Google trends around it.

Check out these 3 examples—it’s really cool to witness the internet’s attention shifting so fast in real-time:

Ex. 1 - The Hawk Tuah Girl

“Spit on that chart!”

The Hawk Tuah Meme blew up FAST.

And then it quickly died down. The best time to go viral with the meme was the 24 hours after the Hawk Tuah meme started.

Now if you say “Hawk Tuah”, you are officially late to the party.

Ex. 2 - Justin Timberlake's Mugshot

Justin Timberlake's mugshot was released on June 18th.

The internet went crazy with viral memes—then the buzz quickly died down. If you missed the 24 hour spike, you missed the best opportunity to go viral.

The world has moved onto bigger and better things.

Ex. 3 - Olympics Gymnast Stephen Nedoroscik

The Olympics were FULL of memes.

My favorite was this guy Stephen Nedoroscik. He was sleeping during other people's events and then wake up for his event like a baller. If you look closely above, notice how the viral tweet and the spike in search trends are in the same 24H span. The first 24 hours are the most important.

When I realized this, I thought to myself “imagine if you could get alerted of new viral meme templates… like a Google Trends Alerts for memes”. Boom, that’s why I started Meme Alerts! No marketer wants to miss a big trending moment, so every 24 hours I send an email with the newest viral meme templates. PLUS: you get access to my meme database and editing setup so you can make memes and post them on the timeline faster. All for only $6.9 😏
